Ear Candling

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Ear candles (preferable 2 candles for each ear, as the first usually just starts the loosening of the wax)
  • Damp towel (to drape around head, covering hair)
  • Container of water (not plastic, cup, dish, to douse candle when finished)
  • Match or lighter
  • Scissors, narrow pointed
  • Cotton swabs (no, these do not go into ear, they are simply to clean around opening)
  • Darning needle or something similar, about 3 inches long

HERE’S HOW:

  1. Lie down on side on flat surface. It is preferable to not use a cushion, thus allowing a better flow from the ear canal.
  2. Wrap damp towel around ear for protection of head and hair. The damp towel should not be necessary if candling is properly done, but is an insurance should the wick drop.
  3. Carefully place narrow end of candle into ear, snug, but not forced. You can tell when it feels comfortable. Hold candle straight up. Make sure you do this where there are not drafts.
  4. Light wick end of candle and hold securely. Keep the atmosphere quiet. Ear-candling is very relaxing, so keep your conversation low-key. It is advisable to move jaw from time to time to help loosen wax.
  5. Watch flame. Flicker usually indicates ear wax is being drawn up and burned off. If no activity appears to be taking place, remove candle and check bottom to see if candle is plugged with wax. Here is where you use darning needle to poke up through the blockage. If bottom candle is smoking this is also an indication of blockage. Do not put candle back in ear until the problem is cleared up.
  6. When candle has burned down to approximate 2-1/2 inches, remove from ear and douse water. Try not to shake candle. Using scissors, cut open the candle lengthwise. A lot of the wax will have been burned off, but there will be reside in the remaining part of the candle.
  7. Take cottom swab and gently remove ear wax bits from outer ear. New wax forming is powdered and whitish in colour.
  8. If the wax remaining in candle is quite dark, brownish orange you probably should do another candle to follow up. Sometimes it’s necessary to do several candles to clear the ear. You’ll be able to tell if the ear is still blocked.
  9. Repeat procedure in other ear. It is best to candle both ears in one session. One ear may require more candling than the other.
